India and Poland have committed to enhancing their collaboration in key strategic areas, including defense, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This development follows discussions between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, where they emphasized the importance of expanding economic ties and set a goal to double bilateral trade by 2030.
The dialogue between the two leaders highlighted opportunities for joint development and production in vital sectors such as defense equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. They also explored potential cooperation in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production initiatives with India, while Tusk underscored the need to diversify access to essential minerals and strategic resources to bolster economic security.
Currently, the bilateral trade between India and Poland stands at approximately $6.3 billion, with ambitions to increase it significantly by the end of the decade. A delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is currently exploring business opportunities in various sectors including defense, agricultural technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.
Plans are also in place to establish a bilateral startup bridge and develop partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials are optimistic that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will further enhance opportunities for exports and investment.
Defense cooperation remains a focal point, with both nations working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to facilitate closer defense-industrial collaboration. They have also agreed to initiate a defense industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue, with prospects for joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies. Their cooperation is expected to benefit from the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union.
During their discussions, regional and international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia, were also addressed. Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, while Polish officials welcomed India’s calls for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine conflict.
In addition to economic and strategic goals, the leaders acknowledged the longstanding people-to-people connections between the two countries, noting Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and the historical support extended to Polish refugees in India during World War II. This meeting marks a significant step in strengthening India-Poland relations, with both governments seeking to expand trade, enhance strategic cooperation, and build more resilient supply chains.
