Modi’s Trip to Indonesia Targets Enhanced Economic and Business Collaboration

Date:

In a significant diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, aiming to strengthen the strategic, economic, and maritime ties between the two countries. Both India and Indonesia, as the largest democracies in the Indo-Pacific region and active members of the G20, are eager to enhance their collaboration in several key areas such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defence, and maritime security. This visit is a follow-up to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India in January 2025, which celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and resulted in agreements on health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.

Despite their strong historical connections and mutual interests, the trade volume between India and Indonesia remains at approximately $30 billion. Both nations are keen on exploring avenues to boost economic exchanges further. India is particularly interested in increasing its investments in Indonesia, focusing on sectors such as critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security to unlock the economic potential.

Digital collaboration is anticipated to be a major focus of Modi’s visit, with Indonesia expressing interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. The two countries are looking into joint ventures in areas like artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses, reflecting the growing importance of digital economies in both nations.

Maritime security will also be a key agenda item, as both countries plan to enhance cooperation in the strategically significant Strait of Malacca. Efforts will be made to bolster naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defence-industrial partnerships. With Indonesia seeking to diversify its defence suppliers, new opportunities may arise for India’s defence sector to play a more significant role.

In addition to economic and security ties, the visit is expected to foster stronger people-to-people connections through enhanced academic, business, and cultural collaborations. Such initiatives aim to build a more comprehensive and enduring relationship between India and Indonesia, ensuring a long-term partnership that benefits both nations.
