End of an Era: Matt Cameron Departs Pearl Jam After Defining Decades

Date:

Matt Cameron, whose powerful drumming helped guide Pearl Jam through nearly three decades of transformation, is officially stepping away from the band. His departure, announced online, closes a chapter that was integral to the group’s continued relevance.
Joining in 1998 during a transitional time for Pearl Jam, Cameron brought stability to a lineup that had seen multiple drummer changes. His work on the 2000 album Binaural set the tone for a series of acclaimed records that followed.
Cameron’s ability to manage two major bands—Soundgarden and Pearl Jam—between 2010 and 2017 elevated his reputation as one of rock’s most versatile drummers. His presence brought credibility and balance to both bands.
His final project with Pearl Jam was their 12th studio album, Dark Matter. Cameron leaves behind a legacy built on more than technical prowess—he was the steady pulse behind Pearl Jam’s evolution.
