Radhakrishnan’s Oath Date to Be Finalised; To Step Down as Maharashtra Governor

Date:

The oath-taking date for Vice President-elect Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan will be finalised today, according to officials familiar with the matter. Radhakrishnan, who secured 452 of 767 votes to become the 15th Vice President of India, is expected to resign as Governor of Maharashtra before assuming office.
The oath ceremony is tentatively planned for September 12, but the final date will be confirmed after consultation with the President’s Office and the Prime Minister’s Office. Home Secretary Govind Mohan is scheduled to brief the Vice President-elect before the formal announcement.
Following his election victory, Radhakrishnan emphasised the need for unity in nation-building, stating that politics should end once elections are over. He stressed that the ruling party and the opposition are two essential sides of democracy. In his outreach to lawmakers, he pledged to strengthen cooperative federalism, prioritise social justice for marginalised communities, and uphold the dignity of Parliament by building consensus across party lines.
Radhakrishnan will formally assume charge as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha during the winter session, likely in November. The 68-year-old leader, hailing from Tamil Nadu, highlighted his humble background and drew inspiration from past leaders of the state, including Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, R. Venkataraman, and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
