Bank of England Head Cautions AI Threat to Global Economic Stability

Date:

The global financial system faces potential threats from advanced artificial intelligence, according to a warning from Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England. In a communication addressed to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the dangers posed by increasingly autonomous AI models, which have grown adept at complex problem-solving. He expressed concerns that cyberattacks, potentially facilitated or expedited by these AI systems, could quickly spread across nations and wreak havoc on interconnected financial markets.

Bailey, who also leads the Financial Stability Board, emphasized that numerous countries lack sufficient measures to govern the development and application of advanced AI technologies. He urged for enhanced international collaboration to ensure that AI is both safely introduced and utilized. A key area of concern, he noted, is cyber risk, as sophisticated AI could heighten the velocity, scope, and financial repercussions of cyber threats. Furthermore, reliance on concentrated technology and third-party service providers could exacerbate the risk of widespread disruption.

He also drew attention to the current high asset valuations and increasing leverage in bond and equity markets, which could intensify the consequences of a significant financial shock. Bailey warned that the strong investor confidence tied to AI might leave markets particularly susceptible to a sharp downturn should expectations shift.

To address these risks, Bailey called on financial authorities around the globe to coordinate efforts aimed at managing AI-related challenges. Strengthening the resilience of the global financial system, he stressed, is crucial in mitigating the potential impacts of these advanced technologies.
