India-Canada Trade Surges with Double-Digit Growth Ahead of Modi’s Visit

Date:

Merchandise trade between India and Canada has surged, marking significant growth in the first eight months of 2026. This development is indicative of a strengthened economic relationship ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Canada in December.

From January to August 2026, Canada’s merchandise exports to India soared to CA$3.03 billion, a 36.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The primary drivers of Canadian exports were metals and minerals, constituting 41% of shipments, followed by agri-food products at 16.9%. Conversely, Canada’s imports from India amounted to CA$7.05 billion, reflecting a 10.2% rise year-on-year.

In 2025, the trade figures were CA$3.9 billion for Canadian exports to India and CA$9.7 billion for imports from India, underscoring a continuing upward trajectory in trade relations. This period of growth has been bolstered by high-level discussions and business initiatives between the two nations. A notable Canadian trade delegation, comprising nearly 300 participants, successfully secured 34 commercial agreements worth approximately CA$300 million. These agreements span sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Further enhancing this bilateral relationship, India and Canada are actively negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). With five rounds of negotiations already completed, both countries are aiming to finalize the agreement by December. These efforts are complemented by discussions between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, focusing on expanding trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as mobility.
