India-New Zealand Trade Pact Commences; EU, Canada, Chile Negotiations Intensify.

Date:

Amidst India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its global trade relationships, a significant development is set to take place as the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand comes into effect on October 20. This agreement, announced by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, promises to grant duty-free access for 100% of Indian exports to New Zealand, marking a pivotal moment in the bilateral trade relations between the two countries.

Signed in April, the FTA is not only aimed at enhancing trade but also at boosting investment between the nations. It includes a commitment from New Zealand to facilitate $20 billion in investment into India over the next 15 years. This strategic move is expected to foster economic growth and development, although India has made the decision to exclude several sensitive agricultural products—such as onions, chickpeas, peas, corn, almonds, and sugar—from the agreement to safeguard domestic interests.

India’s trade ambitions extend beyond New Zealand, as the country is actively pursuing similar agreements with other global partners. Negotiations with the European Union, Canada, and Chile are underway, reflecting India’s broader strategy to deepen economic ties and enhance market access. Notably, the negotiations with Canada are poised to enter their fifth round in October, with both nations aiming to expedite their progress on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Chile also remains on India’s radar, with talks advancing steadily. Meanwhile, India is optimistic about achieving further progress in its trade negotiations with the European Union before the year concludes. These efforts underscore India’s commitment to expanding its trade footprint across diverse global markets.
