PM Modi Advocates Economic Focus, Calls for Calm Legislative Discussions

Date:

As India’s Parliament prepared to commence its Monsoon Session on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged lawmakers to prioritize effective and fact-based discussions over disruptions, aiming for a productive legislative period that runs until August 13. Modi made an analogy between the session’s effectiveness and the monsoon season, stressing that both should be “proactive and productive” to benefit the nation.

The prime minister advocated for constructive debates across both Houses, emphasizing that strong arguments and factual backing should replace unnecessary confrontations. He highlighted India’s strides on the global front, particularly in the space sector, and lauded private space firm Skyroot Aerospace, noting the average age of its team is just 28 years. Modi’s remarks included a subtle critique of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, contrasting the focus on “young people” with Gandhi, a “56-year-old youth.”

India’s recent achievements in space and technology serve as a testament to the aspirations and capabilities of its younger generation, Modi asserted. The Monsoon Session is poised to tackle several significant legislative proposals, including amendments concerning foreign funding regulations, taxation, higher education reforms, judicial reforms, and the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises.

A major legislative focus is a bill proposed to increase the number of sanctioned Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India, in an effort to address the backlog of cases. The session is anticipated to be a political battleground, with the government pushing forward with its agenda of reforms while the opposition is expected to bring national issues to the fore.
