WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to enhance user privacy by enabling connections through usernames rather than phone numbers. This innovative feature is set to transform communication on the platform, providing an alternative to sharing mobile numbers. The rollout is being conducted in phases, allowing users to secure their unique usernames in advance of a complete global launch anticipated later in the year. Once fully operational, users can initiate conversations using only a username, keeping their phone number concealed.
In this new system, users will have the opportunity to select a distinctive handle within the app. To message someone, only the username is required, and no phone number will be displayed. If the desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp’s integrated generator will propose alternative options. Importantly, there will be no public directory for usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can reach out, thus enhancing privacy.
To reserve a username, users should update their app and navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. Notifications will be issued when the feature becomes accessible in different regions. Given the app’s extensive user base, early reservations are encouraged as popular usernames are expected to be highly sought after.
Additional privacy is offered through an optional “username key,” which provides an extra layer of security. By sharing this key separately, users can control who is permitted to start a chat with them. This feature is beneficial not only for individual users but also for creators, businesses, and public accounts, allowing them to align their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp emphasizes that using usernames is entirely optional. Those who prefer the traditional method of connecting via phone numbers can continue to do so. As the feature becomes available across various regions, users will be notified within the app, enabling them to decide how they wish to manage their communications on WhatsApp.
