A Message in a Bombing: Netanyahu’s Strike on Houthis Aims to Deter Iran

Date:

The Israeli bombing that killed the Houthi prime minister was a message aimed not just at Sanaa but also at Tehran, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to deter Iran and its proxies. Netanyahu hailed the strike as a “fatal blow” with clear regional implications.
The operation was a direct response to the Houthis’ persistent attacks on Israel, which are widely seen as being supported by Iran. The group claims its actions are in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza conflict.
The successful long-range strike demonstrates Israel’s willingness and ability to strike Iran’s allies anywhere in the region. The mission’s partial success, with key military leaders surviving, however, means the threat has not been fully neutralized.
The Houthis have promised to retaliate, and the strike risks escalating the shadow war between Israel and Iran. While it serves as a powerful warning, experts question whether it will be enough to change the strategic calculus of Iran or its proxies.
