In a crucial meeting held in Beijing, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval emphasized the importance of maintaining peace along the India-China border as a foundation for advancing bilateral relations. This meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi marked the 25th round of talks between the special representatives of the two nations, focusing on the protracted boundary dispute. The dialogue sought to address issues related to boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and fostering broader cooperation across the border areas.
During the discussions, both India and China reviewed the progress made in their bilateral relations and explored strategies to keep stability along the Line of Actual Control. Both nations reiterated their dedication to resolving the boundary issue through political means, aligning with their long-term interests. This meeting follows significant progress made after a 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to reduce tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since then, various activities such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade via designated routes have resumed.
Ajit Doval noted that the bilateral ties between India and China are gradually normalizing, attributing this positive trend to the sustained peace along the border. Meanwhile, China expressed the necessity of positioning the boundary issue appropriately within the broader context of their relationship. Despite the discussions, both sides remained tight-lipped about any substantial advancements in the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. However, there was a mutual agreement to continue negotiations, with plans to hold the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
The timing of these talks is particularly significant as they precede the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming visit underscores the importance of efforts to further stabilize bilateral relations between the two countries. As such, the talks not only addressed immediate border management concerns but also aimed at laying the groundwork for a more comprehensive and stable relationship moving forward.
