Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies to be held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across the state from October 13 to October 31. The rallies aim to oppose what the BJP claims are Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. Sarma shared these plans during a press briefing in Guwahati, emphasizing the need to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public trust in constitutional bodies.
Sarma accused the Congress party and other opposition factions of politically challenging key institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. The rallies, to be conducted peacefully at district headquarters, are intended to express the BJP’s support for these institutions and counter the Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional issues.
The Assam Chief Minister also criticized the Congress party’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He emphasized that the SIR process is crucial for addressing concerns related to voter lists and illegal immigration in the state. Sarma singled out Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that Gandhi applies different standards to election outcomes based on the winning party and accused him of exerting undue pressure on the Supreme Court.
The BJP’s planned rallies come amidst ongoing political tensions with Congress, particularly over electoral processes and the independence of institutions in Assam. The decision to hold these rallies highlights the BJP’s strategy to solidify public confidence in democratic frameworks while challenging Congress’s stance on institutional matters.
