Delhi Metro Sees Record 82.4 Lakh Riders Amid DTC Strike Boost

Date:

Amid a transportation crisis in Delhi, the city’s metro system emerged as a critical lifeline for commuters, recording its highest-ever single-day passenger footfall on September 17. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported that 8,244,903 passengers used the metro network on this day. This surge in metro usage came as private agency drivers working with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) continued their strike, leaving thousands of buses out of service.

The strike, which reached its fourth day, forced many daily commuters to seek alternative public transportation, significantly increasing the pressure on the Delhi Metro system. In response to the heightened demand, the DMRC implemented measures to accommodate the influx of passengers. This included running 20 additional train trips and deploying eight extra trains during peak travel hours, ensuring that the metro service remained efficient and accessible.

To further manage the situation, the DMRC, in coordination with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), enhanced efforts to oversee passenger movement and maintain security across the metro network. These steps were crucial in managing the unprecedented number of commuters and ensuring their safety and convenience.

The record-setting footfall underscores the vital role of the Delhi Metro as a key component of the city’s public transportation infrastructure, especially during times of disruption in other services. For many residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), the metro remains a reliable alternative when other modes of transport become unavailable.

As the strike continues to affect bus services, the Delhi Metro’s ability to handle increased ridership highlights its importance in maintaining urban mobility and providing a dependable transit option for millions of city dwellers. This scenario also raises questions about the resilience and adaptability of public transport systems in the face of labor disputes and other challenges.
