In anticipation of Chhath Puja, celebrated from November 13 to 16, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service. The ferry is set to begin operations just days before the festival, offering a new way for families to enjoy the Yamuna River while engaging in traditional celebrations.
The ferry service will operate between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering a five-kilometer stretch of the Yamuna River. The one-hour cruise is designed to provide passengers with views of the ghats and the picturesque natural landscape along the riverbanks. Tickets for the service are expected to be priced at approximately ₹500 per person.
During a visit to inspect the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club, Chief Minister Gupta also visited Sur Ghat, the planned site for Chhath Puja celebrations. The area is being developed as a picnic destination, allowing families to gather, enjoy the riverside environment, and perform prayers to the Yamuna.
The ferry service, initially scheduled to launch on February 20, was postponed due to incomplete project work. The necessary infrastructure, such as jetties with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas, is now in place to support the launch.
The vessel, named Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. Featuring a 40-foot catamaran-style hull, the boat is specifically designed for stability and is suitable for navigating the shallow parts of the river.
