India and Denmark are enhancing their strategic partnership with a renewed focus on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, technological innovation, and bilateral trade. This development follows Denmarkâs Business Minister Martin Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2 to 3, where he engaged in discussions with Indian government officials and business leaders.
During his visit, Lidegaard emphasized India’s growing significance as a strategic and commercial partner and expressed Denmark’s commitment to supporting India’s green transition. The two countries are working on the next phase of their Green Strategic Partnership, established in 2020, with a new joint action plan aimed at bolstering cooperation in areas of mutual economic and environmental interest.
In Mumbai, Lidegaard visited APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping group Maersk, and explored investment opportunities with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. In New Delhi, his discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on expanding bilateral trade and improving economic relations, including potential collaborations linked to the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement.
The visit also spotlighted sustainable maritime development, where talks with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revolved around environmentally friendly shipping practices, modern port infrastructure, and the establishment of green maritime corridors. In parallel, cooperation in renewable energy was a significant agenda item. Discussions with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi covered ways to enhance energy efficiency and support India’s shift towards a sustainable power system.
Denmark plays an important role internationally in solar energy development and is a contributor to the International Solar Alliance, which facilitates broader cooperation in renewable energy sectors. The strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is expected to open new avenues for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, further deepening economic ties between the two nations.
