Keir Starmer, the outgoing British Prime Minister, marked a significant diplomatic achievement by playing a crucial role in finalizing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) just before he announced his resignation. This milestone was reached during a meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the margins of the G7 Summit in 2026. The leaders agreed that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) would take effect on July 15, a move anticipated to considerably enhance the trade relationship between the two nations, currently valued at approximately £48 billion annually.
Starmer had been a steadfast advocate for stronger UK-India relations throughout his tenure, with the trade deal being a central goal of his administration. The agreement is seen as a major opportunity for economic expansion, given India’s growing influence in the global economy. Easier and more cost-effective trade between the UK and India is expected to bring substantial benefits to both countries. Since assuming leadership of the Labour Party after its election defeat in 2019, Starmer focused on rebuilding connections with the British Indian community and fostering a robust partnership with India. His government aimed to enhance collaboration with India in various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change.
Before entering the political arena, Starmer established a distinguished career in law, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He rose to the position of Prime Minister following Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. His tenure saw early successes such as stabilizing the UK’s economy and pushing forward domestic reforms. However, his leadership faced difficulties due to several policy challenges and political setbacks, which gradually eroded his standing within his party.
In a heartfelt resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged that his parliamentary colleagues no longer viewed him as the appropriate figure to lead Labour into the forthcoming general election. Accepting their decision with respect and gratitude, he concluded what has been a pivotal chapter in British politics. Despite the challenges, Starmer’s efforts in strengthening UK-India ties and his role in the successful negotiation of the trade agreement remain significant highlights of his premiership.
