IndiGo Halts Mumbai-Manchester Route Due to Economic and Airspace Issues

Date:

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester flights starting August 31, 2026. The decision is attributed to extended airspace restrictions, lengthened flight durations, and increasing operational costs that have made the route unsustainable. The airline highlighted the ongoing challenges in the international aviation sector, including geopolitical tensions, elevated fuel prices, and disrupted routes, as primary factors contributing to the heightened costs of long-haul flights.

In response to these challenges, IndiGo plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially leased in early 2025 to facilitate IndiGo’s expansion into European markets, a strategic move ahead of the delivery of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension of the Mumbai-Manchester route, IndiGo assures that its other long-haul international services will continue as scheduled, ensuring minimal disruption to its broader operations.

The airline’s foray into European markets has reportedly attracted strong customer interest, cementing IndiGo’s footprint in key international areas. However, the combination of extended flight times due to airspace issues, increasing aviation turbine fuel costs, and foreign exchange fluctuations has rendered the Manchester route financially untenable. Abhijit Dasgupta, IndiGo’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, described the suspension as a regrettable but essential decision under the prevailing conditions. He emphasized the positive customer response to the service and expressed the airline’s commitment to resuming the route when conditions improve.

IndiGo is also looking into alternative avenues to maintain its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways while pushing forward with its long-term strategy for international growth. The airline reassures passengers affected by the suspension that they will be informed in advance and provided with assistance, including alternative travel options or refunds where applicable. The move reflects IndiGo’s adaptive approach to navigating the complex landscape of international aviation and its dedication to maintaining customer trust and satisfaction.
