Nepal Proposes Joint Climate Resilience Effort with India and China for Himalayas

Date:

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra “Balen” Shah has put forward a proposal for a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism aimed at combating the increasing climate risks affecting the Himalayan region. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Shah highlighted the critical role of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, which sustains nearly two billion people through its water resources, ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods. He emphasized that rising temperatures pose significant threats, such as glacier-related disasters, floods, and landslides.

The proposed mechanism would involve collaboration between Nepal, India, and China. It aims to facilitate the sharing of satellite data and technical expertise, enhance the monitoring of potentially dangerous glacial lakes, strengthen joint early-warning systems, and coordinate cross-border assistance during disasters. Shah pointed out that increased regional cooperation could significantly improve preparedness for climate-related emergencies.

This proposal comes in the wake of recent devastating floods in Nepal’s Himalayan region, which resulted in extensive damage and substantial loss of life. The disaster underscored the urgent need for stronger climate resilience measures and international cooperation. Shah appealed for more support for Nepal’s recovery and reconstruction efforts and expressed gratitude to India, China, and other countries for their assistance following the floods.

By advocating for this collaborative mechanism, Shah aims to enhance the region’s ability to withstand and respond to climate challenges, ensuring a more secure future for the millions who depend on the Himalayan ecosystems and resources.
