Trade unions are urging the UK government to expedite the electricity grid connection crucial to Tata Steel’s new electric arc furnace at Port Talbot, amid reports of possible delays lasting up to a year. The furnace is an integral part of Tata Steel’s initiative to transition to greener steel production at its Port Talbot facility in south Wales. Following the closure of its blast furnaces in 2024, Tata Steel is constructing this new electric arc furnace to significantly cut down carbon emissions from its steel manufacturing process.
The connection to the electricity grid has hit several roadblocks, with National Grid pointing to challenges such as unsuitable ground conditions, planning regulations, and environmental considerations. These issues have already pushed the timeline back by six to eight months, with concerns that the delay could extend to a full year. This situation has alarmed unions representing steelworkers, who emphasize that the timely completion of the furnace is vital for safeguarding jobs, local livelihoods, and the future success of the Port Talbot transformation project.
Community Union, Unite the Union, and GMB Union have collectively called for government intervention to address these delays and mitigate the uncertainty facing workers and the community at large. This setback occurs on the heels of a fire that recently damaged part of the remaining steel-processing operations at Port Talbot, adding to the operational hurdles faced by Tata Steel’s UK business.
To support the new electric arc furnace, which is anticipated to produce up to three million tonnes of steel annually while reducing emissions, the UK government has committed £500 million. The facility was initially slated to begin operations by late 2027. Tata Steel is actively collaborating with National Grid and government officials to seek ways to accelerate the connection process, exploring options like temporary power solutions and adjustments to construction timelines.
National Grid assures that construction is advancing and reaffirms its commitment to delivering the connection as swiftly and safely as possible, while navigating the complex engineering, planning, and environmental requirements involved.
