Malaysia Proposes Sending DNA Specialists to Nepal, Boosting Forensic Service Exports

Date:

In the aftermath of catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is seeking approval to send a team of DNA experts to aid in the identification of victims. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan disclosed that the country has reached out to Nepalese authorities for permission to deploy these specialists, who will begin the DNA identification process once search and rescue missions are concluded. The focus will be on matching DNA from recovered bodies with samples collected from the families of missing Malaysian nationals.

Efforts are already underway in Malaysia, where DNA samples have been collected from the relatives of 55 Malaysians still missing due to the natural disasters. The urgency of DNA testing has been underscored by the quick burial of some bodies, necessitated by the limited availability of facilities, thus making genetic identification a critical component of the recovery process.

The Malaysian contingent, ready to assist in the rescue and identification efforts, comprises 11 skilled personnel equipped with 12.4 tonnes of essential gear. This includes advanced detection devices, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue tools. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to facilitate their operations in challenging terrains.

Through these comprehensive measures—combining search, rescue, and sophisticated DNA analysis—Malaysia aims to locate the missing individuals and offer solace to affected families by providing them with definitive information regarding their loved ones. The endeavor reflects a commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian support in times of crisis.
