Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation regarding potential shortages of fertilisers and cooking gas. Speaking in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, Modi asserted that these claims are intended to spark panic and tarnish the government’s image.
Modi reassured the public about the government’s efforts to maintain a steady supply of fertilisers despite international tensions and price hikes. He emphasized that the government has shielded farmers from escalating international fertiliser costs by providing substantial subsidies. For instance, a bag of urea priced at approximately ₹3,000 in the global market is made available to Indian farmers for under ₹300, while DAP fertiliser, costing around ₹5,000 internationally, is supplied for ₹1,350 per bag in India.
During the event, Modi also announced the release of the 24th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, offering eligible farmers ₹6,000 annually in direct income support. He highlighted various agricultural initiatives, claiming that farmers have benefited from or saved over ₹50 lakh crore through policies such as minimum support prices, crop insurance, solar irrigation, and soil health programs.
Furthermore, Modi noted that wheat and paddy farmers have received around ₹24 lakh crore through the Minimum Support Price system over the past 12 years, and over ₹2 lakh crore in compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. He underscored improvements in dairy, fisheries, honey production, and agricultural technology as part of the government’s strategy to boost farmers’ incomes and strengthen rural livelihoods.
In addition to addressing agricultural concerns, Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre in Bhildi, Gujarat. This 127-acre facility focuses on research and development of the indigenous Kankrej cattle breed, aiming to enhance dairy farming and related sectors such as biogas and bio-CNG production.
Reflecting on his political journey, Modi recalled his first oath as Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001, marking 25 years of public service. He expressed gratitude to the people of Gujarat for their support in his roles as state and national leader. Modi is slated to participate in events commemorating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, celebrating the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
